How to Choose an Aesthetic Doctor in Singapore — 8 Questions to Ask

11 July 2026 5 min read Dr. Sin Yong

Singapore has hundreds of aesthetic clinics — and the differences in training, ethics, approach and outcomes are significant. Choosing the wrong clinic can produce disappointing results, inappropriate treatments or complications requiring correction. Dr. Sin Yong's honest guide to what separates exceptional aesthetic medicine from mediocre — and the questions you should ask before booking.

Credentials That Actually Matter

Postgraduate aesthetic medicine qualification — an MSc in Aesthetic Medicine or Practical Dermatology from a recognised university is a meaningful indicator of formal training. Surgical background — MRCS indicates formal surgical training and deeper anatomical understanding. KOL status with major device manufacturers — companies like Classys, Hironic and Ilooda choose KOLs based on clinical skill, not commercial relationships. International conference presentations — physicians who present internationally are held to a different standard of clinical knowledge.

Questions to Ask at Consultation

Will the doctor performing your consultation also perform your treatment personally? How many patients with your specific anatomy has the doctor treated? Can you see results from patients with similar concerns? What would the doctor NOT recommend for you — and why? What are the realistic risks and complications? What follow-up is included? Is the device being used appropriate for your skin type and concern — or simply what the clinic has available?

Red Flags to Avoid

Significant pressure to book immediately or purchase packages at consultation. Inability to see results from comparable patients. Treatment recommendations made without thorough assessment of your history. Unwillingness to discuss risks and complications. A doctor who performs multiple treatments simultaneously across multiple patients. Any clinic where you cannot guarantee the doctor performing your consultation will also perform your treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

For non-surgical lifting, skin treatments and injectables, a well-trained aesthetic physician with specific aesthetic medicine qualifications is the appropriate choice. Plastic surgeons perform reconstructive and surgical procedures.

The doctor is significantly more important than the device. The same device in different hands produces dramatically different results. Physician skill is the primary determinant of outcome.

Price is not a reliable indicator of quality. Evaluate credentials, experience and outcomes — not price point.

Yes — especially for significant treatments. A physician who discourages other consultations is a red flag.

Previous treatment history, current medications, photographs of your concerns if possible, and a clear sense of what specifically bothers you and what outcome you are seeking.
