Thread Lift vs Laser Lift — Which Is Right for You?

21 June 2026 6 min read Dr. Sin Yong

Thread lifts and laser lifts are both non-surgical facelift options that produce visible lifting without surgery. They work through fundamentally different mechanisms, suit different patient profiles, and produce different results. Understanding these differences is essential before choosing either — or being steered toward one without proper clinical assessment.

Fundamentally Different Mechanisms

Thread lifts use physical PDO or PLLA sutures inserted beneath the skin to mechanically lift descended tissue. The lift is partly mechanical (immediate) and partly collagen-mediated (developing over months). Laser lifts — including Dr. Sin Yong's Time Freeze Laser LCLR® and VF Lift — deliver energy to stimulate collagen at specific tissue depths. There is no mechanical component. The lift comes entirely from collagen contraction (immediate) and new collagen synthesis (progressive over weeks).

When Thread Lifts Are Better

Thread lifts are appropriate when an immediate visible mechanical lift is the primary goal — for example, before a significant event in the near term. Dr. Sin Yong's Bliss Lift technique achieves this with greater comfort and longevity than standard PDO threadlifts, using his refined placement approach to minimise common thread complications.

When Laser Lifts Are Better

Laser lifts are better for patients wanting progressive, natural-looking improvement; who want to address skin quality at the same time as structural lifting; or who have had thread lift complications elsewhere. The Time Freeze Laser LCLR® and VF Lift produce results that are less abrupt and more naturally progressive — and because there is no mechanical component, there is no risk of thread visibility or migration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Standard thread lifts last 12–18 months. Dr. Sin Yong's Bliss Lift exceeds this with his refined technique. Laser lift results from the Time Freeze Laser LCLR® and VF Lift produce cumulative improvement that compounds with successive sessions.

Yes — and this is sometimes Dr. Sin Yong's recommendation. Threads provide an immediate structural anchor; laser treatment then builds collagen around the lifted tissue, reinforcing and prolonging the result.

Thread lifts require local anaesthetic for needle insertion — discomfort during the procedure is moderate. Laser lifts produce a warm sensation with no needles required. Most patients find laser lift sessions significantly more comfortable.

Thread complications — visible shadows, asymmetry, migration, dimpling — are inherent risks of the technique. Dr. Sin Yong's Bliss Lift technique minimises these risks, and his RVR ProLift achieves equivalent results without threads.

Age is one factor — but degree of laxity, skin quality, goals and timeline all influence the recommendation. Dr. Sin Yong assesses all of these at consultation.
